Land of Salt is a visual exploration of the Swahili coast, carried out in Mombasa, Kenya's thousand-year-old city. The inspiration for this project comes from the novel House of Rust (2021) by Khadija Abdalla Bajaber, a Mombasa-born poet and author.

This initiatory tale, at the crossroads of realism and fantasy, follows the epic journey of a teenager confronted with the disappearance of her father, a fisherman kidnapped by a mysterious sea god. She sets out alone on a perilous quest, sailing on a boat made of whale bones. Accompanied by a talking cat, she travels through a world populated by supernatural creatures, confronting the strengths of the sea and her own fears in an exploration that is both physical and internal.

Will her father's liberation lead her on the path to her own freedom?

Land of Salt est une exploration visuelle menée sur la côte swahilie, à Mombasa, cité millénaire du Kenya. Elle s’inspire du roman House of Rust (2021) de Khadija Abdalla Bajaber, jeune poétesse et autrice kényane.

Ce récit initiatique, à la croisée du réalisme et du fantastique, suit l’épopée d’une adolescente confrontée à la disparition de son père, un pêcheur enlevé par une mystérieuse divinité marine. Elle se lance seule dans une quête périlleuse en naviguant sur un bateau fait d’ossements de baleine. Accompagnée d’un chat parleur, elle traverse un monde peuplé de créatures surnaturelles, elle affronte les forces de la mer, et ses propres peurs, dans une exploration à la fois physique et intérieure. 

La libération de son père la conduira t-elle sur le chemin de la liberté ?
